As per an estimate Orkut has more than 12 Mn profiles from India, Facebook has not lesser than 5 millions. If I assume India would be having about 35 million internet users at present, that means not less than 35% internet users has Orkut access.
Stats would be similar for Facebook / twitter.
Top social networking sites @ India
Orkut
the third position is a surprise, Bharatstudent (http://bharatstudent.com/), with 3.3 million visitors
hi5, with 2 million visitors
Linkedin has about 1 million visitors.
Among the top social sites, I personally feel that hi5 is spreading in fastest pace then comes the Facebook, Myspace, Bharatstudent and Linkedin. Ibibo seems to be loosing grounds.
Today millions log into social networking sites to make friends and socialise, a small but growing number of individuals are also logging on to share not only their personal problems but also to find solutions for them, even for seeking solutions for their family / official problems.
Marketers are always in the hunt for a platform standing on which they can communicate with their consumers and such sites are matching their expectations because here the companies can have direct linkage with their end consumers, those consumers who can even say good or bad about their product directly with them or to other consumers and everything is clear transparent.
It is a known fact that India has long caught up with the social networking sites culture, but whether the power of this medium is going to be well harnessed by the media players in the country is yet to be seen. With social networking sites playing a major role in Barack Obama’s victory, in India such great media testing is yet to prove itself.
