Currently all TV channels are blindly running behind their TRP numbers, everyone is aiming just to attract more eyeballs even if its at the cost of senseless stuff at the name of news and reality shows.. Days are gone when news was restricted to print, now TV is materializing at the name of news and print at the name of glamour.
Today whether its print or TV or Radio everyone is treating Journalism a business of selling advertising spots, this gave the birth of a new journalism called "Page 3" -- sold out editorial columns and proving the concept of "everything is business" again.
Like print wants to attract more readership, TV Channels are aiming at more viewership and this bought the concept of TRP (Television Rating Points) - TRP are of interest to broadcasters, media agencies and advertisiers. Fluctuation in TRP brings the same affect on ad spends, program schedulings and their content managements. Crores of business deals depends upon this TRP therefore, a third party specialised branch of media research is required to collate & analyse the detailed information about TV audience, this body is called TAM.. as with any sampling theory, TRP analysis could be inaccurate due to sampling error. For instance, if I recall correctly currently TAM rating is based upon the data collected by Peopleometer installed at the houses next to the TV sets in 16 cities across 9 states.
What are Television Advertising Community - there are 3 groups in this community, first one is one which collates, analyze and release the TRP numbers, second is who co-relate TRPs with advertising, called Media Planners and the third one is who really spends their monies on this, called Advertisers. Definately the fourth one is people like you and me for whom all this jargons been done at every moment.
Importance of TRP - A television programme or a commercial sent over the air, on a cable system, or direct from a satellite is available for viewing by millions of viewers. How does one know how many of those millions are actually viewing a particular programme? Unlike a newspaper or a magazine, where the publisher can count how many copies are sold, there is no direct way to know exactly how many people are watching any given programme. Hence, indirect measuring techniques based on the statistical sampling theory, called Television Audience Measurement (TAM), are used.
